“By the time I was in the eighth grade, the West Side of Chicago was racially divided, and
OGDEN AVENUEwas the dividing line.
Our side was predominantly Black.
The other side of Ogden Avenue was Eastern European--Czech, Polish, etc. We all went to high school together, played in the orchestra together and went to activity nights together every Friday night, but it was unheard of for us to go to each other's homes or date. This musical is about my growing up years on the West Side.”
"My Farragut High School orchestra was a great institution. There was a contingent of professional classical musicians (Eastern European) who lived on the other side of Ogden. The concertmaster of our high school orchestra, a violinist, was taught by the wife of the concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony. I played the viola, went downtown for lessons, but I also stood in doorways of bars on Ogden and listened to live blues, tuned in to Al Benson on the radio, and jazz on the radio, and the doo wops on the corner. I went to the store on 16th street. The West Side was rich in so many ways.
In my musical OGDEN AVENUE, I tried to bring that world back.”
